Relay for Life Kick Off Assembly - Wednesday May 1st

Registration table outside cafeteria begins Thursday May 2nd

We are pleased to share the details regarding a very special event. Each year, A.B. Lucas Secondary School hosts a Relay for Life event. The Canadian Cancer Society created this event with the purpose of raising funds for cancer research. Over the years, our school has been able to make great contributions towards this cause. In fact, last year we raised $201,000 and hit a cumulative million-dollar mark throughout all of our years of participation.

This year's Relay for Life efforts will be specifically designated towards funding a grant that will help adolescents with cancer cope with their pain. Dr. Jennifer Stinson, an A.B. Lucas graduate, and her colleagues, are in the process of testing how the quality of life of adolescents with cancer can be improved and how healthcare costs can be reduced over time through the use of a smartphone app and real-time support from a registered nurse.  The total value of the grant is approximately $177, 000. All monies raised by students and staff at the A.B. Lucas Relay for Life will be designated to this grant and, as such, the grant will be named "The A.B. Lucas Secondary School Quality of Life Grant of the Canadian Cancer Society".

Our success would not be possible without the hard work of our students, teachers, community involvement, and corporate sponsors. This being said, we would like to offer you the opportunity to participate in our event this year! We would greatly appreciate any amount that you would be kind enough to donate whether that be through a directed donation or a gift to our silent auction. In appreciation of your generosity, you will be recognized in our silent auction and throughout our social media platforms. We are also happy to help organize any sort of advertisement you would like at the school on the night of the event, June 7, 2019.

If you have any questions and/or would like to discuss this opportunity further, please feel free to contact Lian Alqayem, awareness executive, at alqalian960@gotvdsb.ca or the staff advisors listed at the bottom of this page. Your support of this most worthy cause would be greatly appreciated. Together we can create a world that does not fear cancer.

FAQ's

REGISTRATION FEE is $25.00.  This includes your activities, luminary, t-shirt, one meal and a snack and is the participant’s commitment to the Relay. The $100 per person fundraising minimum is to come from others, not themselves if they work part time or necessarily their parents or guardians.

TEAM SIZE.  Teams are generally made up of 6-10 people.

TEAM FUNDRAISING GOAL:  The team fundraising goal as $150 per person.

Relay is the PARTY to CELEBRATE the fundraising they have done.  The fundraising happens BEFORE the Relay. Teams can fundraise ONLINE, through SOCIAL MEDIA (500 Facebook friends donating 50 cents each is $100) as a TEAM (bake sale,  bottle drive, etc.), and with a Pledge Envelope.

ONE OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS IS HAVING TROUBLE RAISING THE $100 MINIMUM. WHAT DO WE DO?

If a team member is having trouble raising funds, help them out! Get together, have a bake sale or other fundraising event, make it a team effort. Remember, the money you raise helps fund cancer research and allows the Society to offer valuable programs and services for patients.

I CAN NO LONGER ATTEND MY RELAY FOR LIFE. CAN MY REGISTRATION FEE BE REFUNDED OR TRANSFERRED TO SOMEONE ELSE IN MY PLACE?

Sorry, we do not refund registration fees, and we are not able to transfer fees paid to register yourself to another person. We can, however, convert your registration fee to a donation. Please call your local Canadian Cancer Society office to make a request.

I CANNOT ATTEND THE EVENT NIGHT. DO I NEED TO REMOVE MYSELF FROM MY TEAM?

We prefer to see all registered participants walking the track in support of Relay. However if you cannot attend the event, you are more than welcome to register and help your team fundraise. Please remember to turn all funds you’ve raised into your team captain prior to a bank night.

WHEN WILL THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY SEND OUT TAX RECEIPTS FOR RELAY DONATIONS?

Donors who've pledged online will receive electronic tax receipts by e-mail within minutes of making their donation. Offline donation tax receipts are sent out as soon as possible after the event, with the intent of having all receipts out by the end of the calendar year.

CAN I GET A TAX RECEIPT FOR MY REGISTRATION FEE/ LUMINARY PURCHASE?

No. The registration fee includes your activities, luminary, t-shirt, one meal and a snack.  When you buy a product, you’re not eligible for a tax receipt under Canada Revenue Agency guidelines.

What if it rains? The forecast is calling for beautiful weather, but we will be there rain or shine! Should it rain heavily, we will take a break and ask participants to find shelter in their cars until the storm passes.

How will I find my team? It will be crowded when you arrive so be sure to coordinate a meeting spot prior to the event. Be sure that all of your team members have your cell phone number so that they can get in touch!

Can I bring my dog? We love dogs, but Relay For Life is for our two-legged friends and family only. No pets please.
